Cameron vows to cut NHS costs 'by a third'

Leader of the opposition David Cameron vowed yesterday (November 2nd) to cut the running cost of the NHS by a third.

Mr Cameron said that the £1.5 billion saved by cutting bureaucracy would be invested elsewhere in the NHS.

Management of the NHS is set to get a shake up as well if the Conservatives get into power, with Mr Cameron saying yesterday that he would hand the day-to-day management of the health service over to an independent body.

However, experts have said that the plans to create an arms-length management of the NHS lacked detail and could lead to the creation of an unaccountable quango.

Mr Cameron vowed to deliver real-terms growth in health spending every year, and added that the £4.5 billion annual bill for administering the health service was astonishing.

He said that his plans "do not mean we are simply going to pour money in as Labour have done".

I'm all for cost efficiency although many others have said they would do this and not delivered. Will be interesting to see what develops. Ultimately it's patient care that counts and any position not involved in this but purely an administrative burden needs sorting out.
