Could you live without your car?

Next Tuesday marks World Car Free Day 2009 and we thought it would be interesting to mark the day by asking how you usually get to work.  What is your commute like?  For many it's a daily grind of crowded trains, trams and buses. For others it's a chance for contemplation, a bit of peace and quiet.

We've set up a poll on Twitter to find out how you usually get to work.

How do you get to work?

I would happily take alternative transport to work, beit train, cycle, bus etc however, in order to achieve any of these alternatives, I would either have to move home or get a job closer to home or lobby the Government and local councils to improve the public transport links between my home town and my place of work as I cannot get any direct public transport currently.

It's worthy of note that the Scottish Government are currently spending £320m upgrading the M80 (Glasgow - Stirling), a road which I use to get to my place of work, but I'm not aware of any monies being spent on improving or creating public transport in this same area.

In order to use public transport to get to work, I would have to leave the house 1 hour and 40 minutes earlier; get home 1 hour and 40 minutes later and travel 12 miles in the wrong direction before getting a train that can actually take me to Stirling and I'm one of the fortunate people who has a job in this shattered economy.

Think I'll be sticking with my car for now! Offer me a viable alternative and I'll give it serious consideration and full support.

I walk and it takes about 25-30 minutes.

I gave up using my car for a lot of things (ie local shoping, gym, school run, taxi for kids)but there is no way i can give it up for work as it would put 45mins on my journey

I try to live without mine as much as possible but it is difficult. I'd imagine doing so in London would be much easier as the public transport alternatives are much better, but where I live they kinda suck so it's not an option really.

I am in agreement with Colin - if I wanted to use public transport to get to work, it would take me all morning to get there, and all afternoon to get home - taking first a bus, then a train and then another train or a bus...the 24 mile journey by contrast takes 40-50 minutes.

I'd be very happy to use public transport if it was feasible and usually walk round town unless I have lots of equipment to transport....
