Medical training overhaul in the pipeline

A change to the way the NHS provides medical training and leadership development is being considered, it has been reported.

The major overhaul of the Continued Medical Education (CME) scheme could see the costs split equally between medical professionals and business, according to Pharmafocus.

Traditionally, industry has paid the total costs of the training skills programme, but the shakeup could see individuals supplementing the industry subsidy.

According to the news provider, the proposed changes have come in conjunction with a major overhaul of its US policies.

Sarah Jones, education and skills manager at the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI), told Pharmafocus: "Its aim is to review the way in which medical education has been carried out in the past, to find out if it is still appropriate for today. And if not, what should we be doing differently."

Recently, the ABPI recently called for a better environment to be created for life sciences research in the UK.
