New survey finds managers baffled by IT set up

A new survey has revealed that three-quarters of UK IT managers are confused by how complex their IT management set up is, showing a need for more management training.

The survey, by Business Transaction Management (BTM) firm OpTier questioned 2,000 managers from a variety of sectors, who together manage over 1,000 staff.

Over half (57 per cent) of respondents admitted that confusing and ineffective management tools are costing their company an average of £4.64 million each year in downtime and staff time.

"Businesses find themselves facing management tool overload, meaning that complex IT environments become even more costly and, ironically, more difficult to manage. It's like trying to watch several TV programmes at once, totally confusing," said Motti Tal, founder and business development manager at OpTier.

Mr Tal went on to say that research showed that two-thirds of businesses have to deploy three people and still take an average of two days to fix a problem.

Just last week, a study in the US by Cyber-Ark found some 58 per cent of employees said that their companies do not provide adequate training about compliance with IT data security policies and about the same number said the data security policies are ineffective.

2,000 managers who together manage over 1,000 staff??

What am I missing here? :)

It means that the study surveyed 2,000 managers at companies with over 1,000 employees :)

Why aren't these managers evaluating the impact of the IT set up to ensure they're making the savings and reaping the benefits of the systems they've purchased?

How on earth could the IT managers themselves be baffled by their own setup? Thats just ridiculous. Are our systems really that complicated? It sounds like IT consultants are created work for themselves.

Hi Simon, doesn't it say they were confused by their management set up as opposed to the systems themselves. That just means that they haven't applied a good approach to managing the business. There are plenty of other parts of businesses that are just as badly organised otherwise their service would be much better!!
