Seal of approval for organisations investing in qualifications

The Chartered Management Institute (CMI) will today recognise the commitment of 18 UK employers to their ongoing investment in developing qualified managers and leaders within their organisation.  They will be rewarded with a plaque recognising their commitment to supporting CMI in raising management and leadership standards within British business through professional qualifications.

Among those who will attend the presentation event at CMI’s London office, are the General Medical Council, First Group, Royal College of Physicians and London South Bank University - organisations which have demonstrated their commitment to developing managers and leaders through CMI management qualifications for a number of years.

The presentation event will also mark the official launch of two new CMI services; namely Validation and Accreditation of employers own in-house management development programmes.  The Validation service will recognise that an in-house programme meets pre-determined quality standards set by the CMI, whilst accreditation allows in-house programmes to meet full management qualification criteria.

Opportunities for professional development are high on the list of essential criteria individuals look for in a prospective employer, and are crucial for organisations wanting to attract and retain the most talented people.  CMI research into the value of management qualifications shows that 64% of employers say that qualifications will increase in importance over the next few years and a similar percentage (61%) believe that organisations will demand more qualifications in the future.

Despite this, results of the CMI’s National Management Salary Survey, conducted earlier this year, show that 46% of employers say they lose staff because they are not offering adequate training opportunities.

Ruth Spellman, Chief Executive of the Chartered Management Institute said:
“UK Plc is facing a skills shortage which employers urgently need to tackle head-on. While the recession has led to redundancies, we are also seeing staff voluntarily leave their organisations because the training opportunities provided are woefully inadequate.

“We are urging employers to use our new Validation and Accreditation service to assess the quality standards of their in-house training programmes and identify where these can be bolstered and recognised. Improving the standards of management and leadership should be a priority for employers in every sector, and qualifications are an essential part of this goal. We are confident that our new service will give employers the tools and resources they need to ensure that the training they offer within their organisations is of the highest possible standard.”
