Some businesses 'still scared of technology'

Not understanding new technology could be hampering businesses, according to experts.

"Among some businesses, there is still a lack of understanding of new technologies that allow flexible and remote working, such as cloud computing, as well as a fear of cost," according to Rob Lovell, chief executive officer of ThinkGrid, a cloud IT services provider.

Remote working, which means working away from the office, is something that employees are keen on.

Research from both the Trades Union Congress (TUC) and Citrix GoToMyPC found that employees want to put the time they spend commuting to better use.

Despite this, the study from Citrix GoToMyPC found that 46 per cent of employers will not allow those questioned to "commute smart".

Mr Lovell said: "Many organisations are fearful about security and trust – although data stored remotely in the cloud and hosted by a specialist company, is far more secure than that stored in the office, and management time is dramatically reduced."

According to research from the TUC out this week, UK workers spend 21.8 million hours travelling to and from work every day, which equates to £266 million worth of working time spent commuting on a daily basis.

Amazing to think is still an issue. Without new technology we're not going anywhere.

Surely the issues raised in your blog are far broader than you imply, socialisation is a very human preoccupation.  IT is wonderful stuff but so is socialisation.

Whilst the technology is there for people to work from home, in practice I think it doesn't always work.  Staff need to be able to interact on a face to face basis sometimes.  And it's probably good for morale that they do, too.
