Workers win back bonuses

Staff working for steel giant Corus are celebrating after it was announced that they will receive their bonuses.

Corus workers in Stocksbridge and Rotherham will receive bonuses they are owed following talks with the majority union Community, reports the Star.

The company, which announced 800 job cuts in the region last month, had previously announced its intention to renege on agreements to pay bonuses for the last quarter, despite workers having completed their contracted duties.

An officer for Corus Steel Roy Rickhuss told the news provider: "Corus have conceded that workers have a legitimate right to be paid for work that they have performed."

He added that the bonuses in question were not an added extra paid only in the good times, but core conditions which had produced an efficient, highly-skilled and motivated workforce.

According to the officer, the decision restores entitlements to the members and Community says that it goes some way to helping repair the breach of trust caused by Corus, and hopes management skills will improve.

Last week, workers at the troubled Corus steel plant in Scunthorpe scooped a £2.2 million lottery jackpot - but say they will stay in their jobs if possible.

Interesting isn't it how the reaction to this is probably going to be along the lines of "ah, well, they deserve it..." whereas if the same had happened to bankers there would be uproar.

Having said that they haven't had much good news recently with the possible closure of Redcar and the slump in global steel demand. No mention of amounts but I doubt they are huge.
