Young people want to become self employed 'rather than face job market'

New research has found that young people would opt to start their own businesses instead of taking their chances with the job market.

A survey by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) shows that nearly two-thirds of UK workers would like to run their own business, with three quarters of 25-34 years-olds claiming they want to become their own boss.

According to Business Link, with unemployment at a 14-year high many young people now feel that they are better off starting their own business.

Ganesh Selvarajah, an adviser for the business advisory service, said that the recession had given many people reason to pursue an alternative avenue in their career development.

He said the recession "has certainly given many people food for thought in the sense that they are looking at self employment as a definite alternative to employment, especially the younger generation who may now feel that there may never be a career for them as it's traditionally known".

Mr Selvarajah praised young business hopefuls' innovation, saying that there had been some imaginative companies starting up which spotted gaps in the market.
