Chairmanship of Kent Branch

Blogs, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Ecademy etc etc etc and the list goes on and on. It wasn't that long ago that emails were “in” and the fax was on the "way out" (its still here!?).

It amazes me as to how web 2.0 has kicked off and in such a big way in what....a couple of years or so? Whatever we might think of Social Media it is here to stay. Personally I think you have to grasp it and you'll soon see the benefits. Test what’s out there and see what’s best for you – personally I love Twitter but I don't get on with Facebook.

A constant subject that comes up is networking. Well, what better a way do it then through social media. Its fast, effective and it can be great fun. If you haven’t done so already (is there really somebody not already on Facebook (apart from me of course)) then give it ago and experiment with it – there is nothing to lose but beware of your privacy. The web 2.0 culture seems very much to have brushed aside privacy in favour of self promotion. Please be aware its not for everyone so do some homework first – or if I can answer any questions on it for you I will.

As the new Chairman of Kent (April) I look forward to meeting the membership and working with the team as well as promoting events and getting behind the CMI_Kent twitter and using the CMI website far more. The CMI website really has so much to offer but you have to dig deep. If you are a manager this is the one-stop shop you are looking for.

As a team the Committee and I look forward to putting on some events - we have one booked for the 9th September (for details click here).

What I would like to hear from the membership is what type of events you would like us to put on? These are demanding times and whether you are in public services or in the commercial world we work and live in a challenging environment. We can work with you to provide an event that may help you with the challenges ahead.

I intend to keep this blog running and look forward to some comments.

Some online ones would be good for me Wesley as then I can kinda choose when and where I consume the 'event'.  In our busy lives this is crucial.  Plus it means people from around the country (world) can attend Kent events.

Hi Mike,

Thankyou for your comment. Online events are a very interesting option. There are videos available already on this website and CMI events are also displayed on youtube see http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=chartered+management+institute&aq=0

I'm interested in Kent as Chair and our events are not just provided for the presentation but are there to help pull people together with management as a proffession or interest. You are right and you will benefit from this on an online basis but I still believe that there is much to be gained from visiting a site and meeting people face to face. We'll certainly look at putting some of our events onto video after the event.

Sure there will always be a premium for meeting physically, it's just not always easy to do that with work and family stuff going on.

Sounds good Wesley, I look forward to seeing how things progress.  Do of course let me know if I can help at all.

One thing that may be of interest is that of a book club.  We're developing this idea with a couple of branches in Scotland.  Happy to include you in the test phase.

HI Mike,

Point taken - As I say I quite understand and lets see what we can do about it.

Wesley

HI Adi,

Will do. Yes feel free to include us in the test phase, would be interested to help.

Wesley

Super.  I'll pop you an email so that you're up to speed with things.
