Do personal interests influence the wider company recruitment process?

I often work with service leavers as they go through the process of finding a job back in civilian life and so see both sides as an experienced (former) corporate team builder. I know (perhaps knew) what model of candidate I wanted to find for my teams. I now see a whole new market place opening as up to 24K service leavers join the work place ranks every year.
I guess my simple question, to gage wider opinions and experiences, is:-
If you were against current UK (and allied) operations in Afghanistan (or similar), you are a professional recruiter for a corporate or like, and a service leaver was put forward for the position he / she is qualified to do well, what would you do?

For me it wouldn't matter in the slightest. As it happens I'm a bit of a peacenik, but I don't for one minute think that service men and women have much of a say in where they're positioned so it would seem unfair to discriminate against them on those grounds.
