How Amazon spoke to Zappos employees

If you havn't seen the news, online retailer Amazon bought shoe retailer Zappos this week for somewhere between $8-900 million.  Amongst the reasons given for buying the retailer were the company culture, leadership team and great staff that work for Zappos.  Here is Amazon chief Jeff Bezos talking to Zappos employees.

As an example of good talent management it's a fine one and puts at ease many of the questions Zappos staff will have had regarding the takeover.

I keep hearing about Zappos, are they even available in the UK? I've had a look on their site and didn't see anything that indicated they were. Maybe the Amazon sale will help with that. It'd be interesting to try this world class customer service I hear so much about.

Of course, the job of easing the mind of employees in a takeover 'victim' is naturally alot easier if you don't intend to remove management or dissolve the brand. Naturally in some circumstances - it just makes perfect sense to do so, and in those cases - consoling employees takes real skill.

I guess what I'm saying is, it's easy to deliver good news.

I agree Andrea. Maybe we'll get to find out more about Zappos now. The reasons given above for purchase make interesting reading. No mention of bottom line contribution and efficiences for example. A lot is mentioned about people.

I was very surprised to her about the Zappos purchase, I have been shopping Zappos.com for about 2 years now and they provide a great service to it's customers. I believe a fresh web design is needed to take Zappos to the next level but I'm sure amazon has that in the works. The more I read about this story the more I realize how much value the employees of Zappos brought to the table in the purchase of the company.

Hi Vince - bottom line results come from having great people doing a great job - having a good product helps too!
