Skip the job hopping and stay put
I am undecided on this one. I can see both sides although with current economic downturn and growing unemployment, the pendulum may be swinging towards stability and stay put?
It's become common wisdom that to advance your career you need to look for better jobs at different companies. But contrary to what most people say, research has shown that job-hopping may not be the best — or quickest — way to the top. In fact, moves within the same company produce a greater number of and faster promotions than external moves. Next time you're considering a jump to a new company for a seemingly better title, remember that many hirers look for stability as well as experience and capabilities. Staying put and securing an internal promotion, even if it takes a little longer, may yield better career results in the long term.
What do you think - better the devil you know (or is this called procrastination?) or be bold and go for the top in a new, risk, move?

I'd be interested in seeing that research Keith. Of course in an ideal world internal promotions would be the way to go, both for the company and the employee, but despite the vast amount of theory on employee engagement it is still remarkably rare that companies cater for individual career development to a proper extent.
