How companies can get the most from their talent - Gary Hamel

Comments

Totally reinforces the importance of leadership - how we get people to bring initiative, creativity and passion to work instead of them pouring those into their hobbies and out of work activities! Gary Hamel talks sense ...

Hi Margaret - whilst it is true that these are important factors it doesn't mean that the whole of the old model needs to be thrown out with the bathwater as Gary suggests.

If the company doesn't have a clearly defined vision that it can set out for people to buy into then how will the initiative, creativity and passion be channelled in the right direction?

The best managers have always encouraged these themes and many trends such as enablement/empowerment/ownership etc have supported this. Managers also need to remember that, as far as possible, it is important to have fun in the workplace.

I recommend FISH as a good read for managers and staff alike (the video is good too!).

Margaret, Ray, I agree with you both.

Hamel's hierarchy of capabilities for contributing to value creation is illustrated in the diagram in my note here...

Without throwing out old models but combining them with the new, try using the open source value network approach.
