Who do you turn to for help?
We launched our Management Book of the Year competition today and some research we conducted around the event showed that 85% employees go anywhere but their boss for help and support.
The reasons for this reticence included:
- Not wanting to look dumb
- Not wanting to bother their boss
- Not trusting what their boss says
All of which is a bit of a worry. Alas, never fear, for CMI is here. Should your boss not be a port of call in a storm, we have thousands who hopefully will be.
The CMI Community
The new CMI Community offers just such support for a manager in distress. You can ask away whenever you need help and get support from fellow managers around the country world. As it's my baby I couldn't let this opportunity pass without a little plug.
To the bookmobile Batman
The survey mentioned earlier revealed that around 30% of people had read a management book but only 5% actually turned to those books when they had a problem at work.
So, this begs the question of how do you get help with your work based problems? You're clearly not getting it from your boss (help that is), and it doesn't appear that you're getting help from books.
So how do you get help at work?

Comments
Just seems to support many of the previous studies showing a complete lack of employee engagement. For me, managers these days are coaches rather than managers.
As for how I learn, I probably do it from colleagues and peers as much as anything. I probably don't turn to my boss a great deal either if I'm honest.
I turn to the web a great deal. There are lots of how to guides, blogs etc. that cover various topics now that it is more often than not my first port of call.
