For reversing the tide of falling rolls and making a business case for keeping nautical sciences on the curricula at Banff & Buchan College, David Cook has won the overall CMI Chartered Manager of the Year Award.

David Cook Chartered Manager of the YearAgainst a field of other regional and national winners in the UK and abroad David’s radical proposals to reconfigure nautical sciences training in the face of declining demand for fisheries industry training courses at the college helped him to secure the top CMI prize.

From being the Cinderella department, nautical sciences now occupies a state-of-the-art building overlooking the bay at Peterhead, it’s attracting increasing numbers of students from as far afield as New Zealand and has become a unique selling point for the college.

But as technology sector manager, David is not just responsible for nautical sciences. He is responsible for 80 lecturers, teaching a range of subjects including marine, mechanical, electrical and electronic engineering, motor vehicle studies, welding and fabrication and construction trades.

“What I try to do is think about the student experience. Ultimately, most students go into further education to try and enhance their employment opportunities. I have made sure there is a strong interface between the college and employers to ensure that the curriculum is developed to provide our clients, the students, with the best possible employment opportunities at the end of their studies. We have a fantastic track record in getting people into employment.”

David is a Chartered Engineer as well as being a Chartered Manager. His background is in teaching and engineering – he worked on oil rigs in the North Sea, which is how he came to be working in Scotland a few hundred miles away from his home town of Scunthorpe.

He has found that gaining management qualifications and Chartered Manager status has brought him into a contact with a diverse range of people and feels that it is one of the key benefits of CMI membership. Becoming a Chartered Manager has helped him to bring all his management skills into play and to focus on getting the best out of his team.

On winning the Chartered Manager of the Year Award he says: “I am absolutely amazed and delighted. It was completely unexpected and really nice.”
