With over 90,000 members who are professional managers, our research can’t be ignored by those who need to know what’s happening on the ground.
The Impact of Management and Leadership Development
In partnership with Penna, we are currently undertaking our biggest research project of 2011/12 looking at the impact of management and leadership development (MLD). With a management population expected to reach nearly 6 million in the next five years, employers need to ensure their managers have the skills and attributes necessary to engage their teams and achieve high performance.
Raising the standard of management is vital for UK plc. There is a well documented skills shortage in the UK, with the UKCES highlighting a deficiency of management and leadership skills in a number of sectors. Yet in today’s fragile economy learning and development budgets are under threat. Demonstrating return on investment is crucial if organisations are to continue to secure funding for future management and leadership development.
This research, involving a large-scale survey alongside in-depth focus groups and case studies, will seek to understand what effective MLD looks like and how it can make a difference to managers and employers.
Nearly 4,500 managers completed our survey and we are analysing the data to gain a better understanding of how organisations invest in management and leadership develop and to what effect. If you would like to offer your organisation as a potential case study to illustrate the impact of MLD please email us with your details.
CMI and Penna will be launching the report of this research on 28 February 2012, with the All Party Parliamentary Group on Management. BIS Minister Rt Hon David Willetts MP will join a panel of speakers including Terry Morgan, Chair of Crossrail and President of the CMI, Gary Browning, CEO of Penna to discuss whether poor management is holding back growth in the UK and how effective management and leadership development can positively impact on business performance.
Future Forecast: Expectations for 2012
2011 began with high hopes that the economic situation was improving and workplaces would start to feel the effects of recovery. However, as this report shows, it has clearly been another very difficult year for UK managers – and 2012 looks set to be equally challenging.
Management Innovation in Consulting
Despite a lack of detailed studies on the subject, many commentators have suggested that management innovation in the consultancy sector is under pressure. In the words of The Economist, "the consulting industry desperately needs a 'New Big Idea'". At its most basic, this report refutes that argument.
Economic Outlook Survey
We recently ran the October 2011 edition of our Economic Outlook series which examines, on a bi-annual basis, how the economy is affecting managers in all sectors right across the country and tracks managers' optimism levels about future performance. Almost a year on from the Comprehensive Spending Review, we asked managers what they thought about prospects for growth, both in terms of their organisation and the wider economy. The report reveals the concerns held by the UK’s managers and leaders about the current economic situation and the private sector’s ability to rebalance the economy by providing growth and jobs in the coming months. CMI’s report does, however, also offer a glimmer of hope, outlining senior executives’ views on the state of the economy in 12 months and beyond.
