Help or hindrance: can Government help UK plc lead the way out of the recession?

Lord Eatwell, President of Queens College, Cambridge, and Chief Economic Adviser to the Chartered Management Institute, and Patrick Dunne of 3i, offered their views on the way out of the recession.

The challenges of rebalancing the economy in the wake of the financial sector's collapse were discussed. Some changes will be market-driven, others policy-driven. Measures to improve improve business confidence were also debated, while potential positive features of the recession were highlighted: for instance, it is appears to be encouraging innovation.

The meeting was also the first step in the consultation process for the development of CMI's Manifesto for a Better Managed Britain.
