Is UK plc ready for carbon trading?

Environment Minister Phil Woolas MP told the Group's meeting at the start of March that nothing less than an "industrial revolution" is needed to tackle the threat of climate change.

Highlighting the scale of the challenge, he acknowledged that such a revolution would have to be international, rather than national, but pointed to the growing interest in carbon trading schemes around the world.

The impact of the Carbon Reduction Commitment, which will be introduced through the Climate Change Bill and will affect large public sector and commercial organisations from April 2010, was also discussed.

Dr John Roberts CCMI, former chief executive of United Utilities and chair of the Chartered Management Institute’s new ‘Greening Management’ research Steering Board, discussed the gap between best practice and most managers’ current day-to-day experiences.

Toby Campbell-Colquhoun, environmental products trader with Shell, outlined the development of Shell’s global emissions trading business and debated the challenges in establishing a fully functioning and effective market in carbon.
