CMI backs scheme to recruit more managers as school governors

CMI is backing the new Inspiring Governors Alliance, which aims to bring the working world and schools closer together by recruiting more professionals as school governors.

The Inspiring Governors Alliance brings together several organisations from the worlds of education policy and business, including the Departments for Education and Business, Innovation and Skills. Research has estimated that governors make a contribution to the education system worth over £1bn, yet schools facing the biggest challenges often struggle to attract governors with the right skills. As well as calling on individual business professionals to volunteer as governors, the Alliance is also working to show employers how they can benefit from supporting staff who want to become governors.

CMI’s Director of Strategy, Petra Wilton, said:

“Managers’ professional expertise can make a huge difference to schools and volunteering as a governor is a win-win experience. It’s a great way to gain exposure to different situations and new challenges.

“Not only does the school benefit, but so does the individual and their employer – so we’re calling on employers to back this new scheme and support managers in stepping up to inspire the future of schools across the country.”

Employers and managers can find out more about the potential benefits of volunteering as a school governor through the new Inspiring Governors Alliance website,
