Bruce Carnegie Brown named CMI president elect

Appointment announced as CMI reveals record year

[19 September] - The Chartered Management Institute (CMI) has named the senior financial services leader Bruce Carnegie-Brown as its new president elect. CMI announced the appointment at the 2016 AGM at which CMI revealed a record year for the organisation with a 12% rise in membership to 136,000 and 100 new partnerships secured with higher education institutions and education providers.

The plc non-executive chairman Carnegie-Brown will spend a year working with current CMI president Mike Clasper before starting his two-year term when Clasper steps down in September 2017.

Speaking on his appointment, Carnegie-Brown set out his ambitions for supporting CMI:

I wanted to get involved with CMI because I believe in the huge value that developing the skills of managers adds to their careers and their employers. I’m passionate about education and training and want many others to share in the opportunities that I’ve enjoyed.”

Carnegie-Brown has been a Companion of the CMI, its highest level of honorary membership, since 2014 following a top level 30-year career in the financial services industry.

Since 2010, Carnegie-Brown has held a number of non-executive roles including vice chairman and lead independent director of Banco Santander SA, a non-executive director of Santander UK plc and a non-executive director of JLT Group plc. Previously, Carnegie-Brown worked for 25 years in a variety of roles, including managing partner of 3i Group plc’s Quoted Private Equity business, CEO of Marsh McLennan’s UK and European businesses; and a managing director of JP Morgan. He is also a Trustee of Historic Royal Palaces and a Deputy Lieutenant of Greater London, a Past President of the Institute of Bankers; and a member of the Chartered Insurance Institute.

CMI is the professional body representing more than 136,000 leaders and managers, and awards the industry’s highest professional accreditation, Chartered Manager. In the past 12 months, CMI has worked with more than 40 employers to launch a suite of management apprenticeships, including the Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship.

Ann Francke, CMI’s chief executive, commented:

Bruce has an amazing track record in managing and leading big businesses. CMI is at a great turning point as the number of employers, educators and managers we work with has hit a record high. I’m looking forward to working with Bruce as he helps us to increase awareness of who we are and what we do.”
