CMI comments on the rise of Levy-funded MBA apprenticeships

  • Apprenticeship Levy-funded MBA apprenticeships will boost management and leadership capability
  • Poor management is hitting business performance
  • Apprenticeships opening the door for developing managers at all career stages

Too many people still harbour the outdated idea of apprentices only being young men in overalls, getting their hands dirty while learning a manual trade. To meet the needs of a post-Brexit, modern service economy, we need to address the chronic under investment in critical skills like management and leadership. The new management leadership apprenticeships do just that. Designed by over 50 employers from all sectors, they enable apprentices to learn modern management and leadership practices at every level, including the senior leader MBA.

Currently we’re a nation of 2.4m 'accidental managers', as 71% of organisations promote people into management without any training. As a result, the Productivity Council, OECD, and Bank of England data shows that quality of management is the biggest factor in determining productivity. Addressing poor management could improve UK performance by £150bn according to the latest McKinsey research.

Management apprenticeships are critically helping people of all backgrounds. Our data on degree apprentices show over half are women, half are under the age of 30, and 47% are from economically deprived regions. The new MBA-level apprenticeship intakes are also providing significant routes for improving social mobility.
