A chemist by training, I joined BP after graduation and spent time based in both the UK and France. Initially these roles were predominately technical, but soon evolved to include managerial and commercial aspects, ranging from production to customer-facing support. During my time with BP, I was fortunate to receive some great management and leadership training, but it was whilst working internationally that I embarked upon a distance learning MBA with the University of Durham. This allowed me to underpin my practical management experience with more of the theoretical understanding.
Later in my career I had the opportunity to lead a number of multi-disciplinary, cross-organisation teams, where I still relished the opportunity to coach and mentor those working for other organisations. More recently I worked both with and within academia, before joining the World Energy Council earlier this year as a Senior Director. Here I have responsibility for our 90+ member countries around the world, our Future Energy Leaders programme and our relationships with Government and Institutions across the world.
I joined the CMI relatively recently and have been involved with the North-East, Yorkshire and Humberside Board since 2015, and assumed the role of Events Champion. My role on the Board is to ensure we have a coordinated and strategic approach to events across our region, providing high-quality events valued by our members and which resonate with the CMI’s thought leadership agenda. In many respects there are similarities with my “day job” in delivering member-centric value, and also parallels with my time on national committees with the Royal Society of Chemistry.
With the support of Board colleagues my experiential learning and theoretical understanding has been further enhanced by successfully undertaking the CMI’s Chartered Manager earlier this year.
I look forward to interacting with our members across the Region to further develop inspiring and inspirational events for all.
