My original training was in electronic engineering (in my home city of Aberdeen) but that original direction changed many years ago when I decided to join the Civil Service and move to London. 

This brought me into my first people and business management role, a role that has continued since. 

My civil service career lasted over 30 years and included time in Whitehall (and elsewhere) working in the defence and foreign service areas.  During this period I had no less than 24 jobs ranging from PRINCE 2 project and programme management through HR strategy and management, finance and into operational management (and of course included significant periods of time working with the military).  This has left me with a wide range of skills which I now use both as an independent consultant and in my non-executive director roles.

The variety of management challenges faced during my main career included delivering core ICT change against very challenging time scales (and tight budgets) through to significant soft changes organisation wide.  These rested alongside day to day budget management and people management issues in multi-million pound activity with groups from a handful to thousands. 

This work has continued in my consultancy career e.g. I recently led the design and initial implementation of a significant change programme in a UK University.

My consultancy work tends to be mainly in soft aspects of business change, HR and leadership development.  Largely this is because these areas offer interesting challenges but also because these are, in my view, the keys to successful change.  I use my psychometric assessor and emotional intelligence coaching skills alongside extensive experience in coaching and mentoring for many of these change opportunities. 

I am a qualified NLP practitioner and currently work part time as the HR Director for an international company.

I am now a member of the CMI Thames Valley Regional board and I am a member of a University Council and a School governor which, with my executive coaching work, helps fill my week.
