How to become a Chartered Manager

Becoming Chartered involves an assessment process underpinned by CMI’s Professional Standard framework. It’s your chance to showcase what you’ve achieved so far and your plans for future professional development.

We provide you with the assessment criteria from the get-go, so you’ll know exactly how to achieve your Chartered Manager (CMgr) status. We’ll also give you a comprehensive range of support materials to help you make your achievements and talents shine.

There are 3 possible routes to Chartered Manager.

Cost

Costs: £715+VAT (*plus ongoing annual CMI membership fee of £15/month). Flexible payment options available.

Eligibility

You're eligible for this route if you have either...

  • A degree level qualification that's management, business or leadership focused; plus 3 years' experience in a management role.
  • At least 5 years' management experience (equivalent to Level 5 or operational / senior management level), if you don't have a management-specific qualification.

What's involved

  • Complete a written application which summarises your leadership and management journey and showcases your key achievements.
  • This is followed by online professional discussion with a CMI assessor to explore your application in more detail, bringing your skills and experience to life.
  • If successful, you'll receive a digital Chartered Manager certificate. You can request a print version for a nominal charge.
  • Please note that you will need to pay an annual CMI membership fee to maintain your Chartered status, which gives you access to all the CMI resources you need to fulfil the Continuing Professional Development requirement.

How to apply

To apply for Chartered Manager Status, you'll need to be a CMI member. If you're not already, you can sign up today and get one month free!

Already a member? Simply log in to your CMI account and head to the Chartered Manager registration page to start your application and make payment. We recommend using our Application Template and Support pack to help you prepare.

Cost

Cost: £155+VAT (*plus ongoing annual CMI membership fee of £15/month).

Eligibility

You're only eligible for this route if you have either...

  • Completed a CMI Diploma or Extended Diploma in Management & Leadership ( level 5 or level 6) within the last 5 years, and you have 3+ years' experience in a management role.
  • Completed a CMI Certificate, Diploma or Extended Diploma in Strategic Management & Leadership (at level 7 or level 8) within the last 5 years, and you have 3+ years experience in a management role.

What's involved

  • This route builds on your eligible CMI qualification identified above.
  • You'll be offered a fast track assessment process taking into account your prior learning with CMI.
  • If successful, you'll receive a digital Chartered Manager certificate. You can request a print version for a nominal charge.
  • Please note that you will need to pay an annual CMI membership fee to maintain your Chartered status, which gives you access to all the CMI resources you need to fulfil the Continuing Professional Development requirement.

How to apply

You're likely to already have a CMI account from when you were studying. If your membership is active, just log in and head to the Chartered Manager registration page to start your application and payment. If it's lapsed, please contact our membership team to reinstate it before registering. Don't forget to use our Application Template and Support pack to help with your application!

Cost

There are also no additional costs for the employer or training provider. You'll benefit from 3 months free CMI membership, then a special introductory membership fee of £60 for the first year.

Eligibility

You're eligible for either foundation or full Chartered Manager award if you have Completed your Apprenticeship's end-point assessment (EPA) for one of these management apprenticeship standards and have relevant management experience:

  • Level 3 - Team Leader / Supervisor
  • Level 3 - Business Administration
  • Level 4 - Associate Project Manager
  • Level 5 - Operations / Department Manager
  • Level 6 - Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship (CMDA)
  • Level 7 - Senior Leadership Apprenticeship (SLA)

What's involved

  • The Chartered Manager knowledge assessment criteria is fully aligned to the End Point Assessment, so no additional work is required for you as the apprentice.
  • You'll need to opt-in to become a CMI Member upon successful completion of your End Point Assessment to attain your Chartered status and you must maintain your membership of the CMI on an annual basis.
  • Please note that you will need to pay an annual CMI membership fee to maintain your Chartered status, which gives you access to all the CMI resources you need to fulfil the Continuing Professional Development requirement.

How to apply

If you've successfully completed an eligible Management and Leadership Apprenticeship, regardless of whether the End Point Assessment or qualification was with CMI or another provider, you can apply for your Chartered Status.
