A case in point: Serving Our Superheroes

One striking example comes not from a corporate giant, but from a grassroots UK charity: Serving Our Superheroes, which was founded by Sarah Gardner BEM CMgr FCMI. Set up to support front-line workers, the organisation has woven sustainability into its DNA – showing that leadership is about values as much as vision.

During the pandemic, Serving Our Superheroes faced the urgent challenge of supporting hospitals and communities when resources were scarce. Its solution was both practical and pioneering. It created bags, face masks and hospital trousers from recycled materials, repurposing waste textiles into essential items. At the same time, it diverted thousands of toiletries from landfill, redirecting them to hospitals and care settings.

The result was twofold: critical support delivered where it was needed most, and a measurable reduction in waste and environmental harm. The approach earned the organisation the International Green Apple Environment Award, a recognition of global leadership in environmental best practice.
