An employer-funded route to Chartered recognition, built for real workplace impact

Qualification overview

The CMI Operational Leadership & Management Programme is an accelerated pathway designed to transition middle managers into confident, strategic leaders. It focuses on operational excellence and driving measurable business results, while maintaining flexibility and adaptability to allow partners to tailor delivery to the needs of employers and learners.

The programme bridges the gap between supervising teams and leading departments. By condensing core leadership principles into three impact-driven masterclasses, it allows managers to develop strategic capabilities without extended time away from the business.

Aligned to the CMI Professional Standard, Chartered Manager (CMgr) status is also embedded into programme delivery, offering a recognised benchmark of credibility (subject to eligibility).

Who it's for?

  • Middle managers seeking an accelerated route to formalise their expertise with Chartered status.
  • Department heads who need a flexible development path that fits around demanding roles.
  • Operational leaders aiming to solve departmental challenges and demonstrate clear business impact.

Qualification structure

This is a practical measure of professional competence. We have condensed high-value leadership themes into three core masterclasses, ensuring learning translates directly into organisational progress.

Masterclass 1: Leading People and Stakeholders

Focuses on mastering the 'soft' skills of departmental leadership by fostering inclusive, high-performance cultures and managing complex relationships to drive team success.

Masterclass 2: Operational Delivery and Excellence

Focuses on bridging the gap between theory and execution by mastering operational planning and the financial oversight required to run an efficient, data-driven department.

Masterclass 3: Management Impact Project

Focuses on delivering measurable ROI through a real-world project, using data and project management methodologies to solve an operational challenge or opportunity.
  • Self Assessment Diagnostic

A bespoke diagnostic tool used at the start and end of the programme to assess initial capability, track progress, and clearly demonstrate the new skills gained.

  • Masterclasses

Complete three high-impact masterclasses, which are specifically designed to bridge the gap between technical expertise and operational management and leadership.

  • Strategic Impact Project

Rather than relying solely on management theory, learners solve a live, operational challenge in the workplace to deliver provable impact.

  • Chartered Manager

Following a self-reflective professional discussion, leaders will achieve either Chartered Manager (CMgr) or Foundation Chartered Manager (fCMgr) status, serving as a globally recognised validation of professional ability and commitment (subject to eligibility).
