Article: “Chartered status gives me personal validation and a professional network” Written by Annie Makoff-Clark Friday 14 November 2025 Share Share to LinkedIn Share to Facebook Share via email Jo Ford CMgr FCMI, our Chartered Manager of the Week, discusses the importance of positivity and having an entrepreneurial spirit Jo Ford CMgr FCMI may be relatively new to CMI – she was awarded Chartered Manager status in 2024 – but her managerial journey really started in her teens. Aged 15, she was helping to organise national gliding competitions and spending a lot of time around light aircraft. Jo then worked in managerial roles for large retailers as an undergraduate. Since then, she has run a restaurant, a contracting business and a 650-acre farm – and has worked with creatives and local authorities. More recently, she worked with third-sector organisations, providing strategic and operational support across finance, HR, IT, risk analysis and crisis management. Decisions made out of necessity Jo, who describes herself as “entrepreneurial”, set up her own consultancy business in 2000 to fit around her family. The world at the time was not amenable to flexible working, but Jo had other ideas. “A lot of my career journey is based on decisions that were made out of necessity, rather than strategic objectives,” she says. “But it meant that when there have been blocks, I’ve found ways around them. I started my business because I couldn’t get a job to work around my new family. So, I thought, ‘If I can’t get the job I need, I’ll create a job for myself.’” Are you a Chartered Manager with a story to tell? Contact us It is perhaps ironic, then, that while Jo created a business that gave her the freedom and flexibility to work around her children, her married life necessitated working in farming – an intense industry that, as Jo points out, “never stops”. But just four years into her new business, Jo suddenly became a lone parent to her three young children. It became even more important for her to be “the parent I wanted to be”, while continuing to deliver high standards for her clients. It was, she says, challenging at times, particularly as she felt she had to hide her home situation to prospective clients and employers. “I’ve faced a lot of prejudice due to being a woman and a lone parent,” she admits. “It’s only in the past couple of years that I’ve started to share that I parent solo.” Yet Jo’s no-nonsense approach has enabled her to navigate difficult situations. In fact, it’s what makes her the leader she is. Never scared of saying no “I balance being approachable with being extremely clear and direct,” she says. “I’m never scared of saying no if I feel it’s best for the business. My focus is on ensuring people feel valued, heard and able to succeed to the best of their abilities. Part of that is being a straight talker and being direct with people.” Equally, Jo is comfortable making big changes in an organisation if she believes there is an issue with workplace culture. She has not been afraid to “exit people very quickly” in the past if they happen to be negatively impacting morale.
