Article: Flexible resourcing: how can management consultants adapt to a spike in demand? Written by Ian Wylie Wednesday 04 June 2025 Share Share to LinkedIn Share to Facebook Share via email Using flexible resourcing when your core team is maxed out is an opportunity to deepen relationships with trusted partners, deliver better outcomes for clients and grow your consulting practice sustainably. But you need the right approach… For independent management consultants, managing fluctuating workloads is a constant challenge. During peak demand periods, the ability to scale your capacity without compromising quality can make all the difference. Engaging flexible resources – experienced professionals brought in on an as-needed basis – can dramatically increase your effectiveness and efficiency. But doing it well means more than just filling a skills gap. It requires strategic thinking, structured onboarding and, above all, trust. Understand when and why Melanie Franklin MCMI ChMC, director of Agile Change Management, says there are two main reasons she brings in external talent: to gain perspective and to access specific skills. “I recently brought in additional resources because, although the existing team could have done the work, I wanted a new, objective voice,” she recalls. “This worked very well because it identified some assumptions that were no longer true.” When faced with emerging technologies or complex client demands, the value of specialised expertise becomes clear. “In assignments requiring an understanding of AI, for example, there is very little experience available, but it’s useful to bring in specialists in data analysis.” Read more: why getting ahead of the game pays dividends as a management consultant Rachel Lambert CMgr FCMI ChMC, managing director of consulting firm Studyflex, echoes this, noting that flexible resourcing is especially effective for functions that aren’t constant or full-time needs. “Marketing and content support, administration, operations such as centre delivery and marking of qualifications – these can be in big chunks and it works out better for costs to do this with trusted partners.” She also cites project delivery as a key area, particularly where specialist knowledge is needed. Prioritise trust and track record According to Rachel, trust is paramount. “The main point is to use established individuals who you can trust with your brand and clients,” she says. This means building a network of vetted, reliable partners who understand your business and your values. “We have a group of trusted partners who we have worked with before or rigorously assessed,” Rachel says. “All our partners have signed NDAs with us, and each project must be set up with a clear plan and delivery expectations.” Consultants must remember that their external resources are an extension of their brand. “Our clients shouldn’t be able to tell the difference,” she says. This level of integration is only possible with individuals who are not just skilled, but also aligned with your standards and culture.
