“That’s when I slowly realised that my strengths were in organising things, allocating resources and managing people,” she says. “I’ve always taken the view that things can always be improved, and that’s what I was striving to do: create that ethos of continuous learning and improvement.” 

“I’d found my calling”

Discovering CMI and embarking on the Chartered Manager process after this lightbulb moment was an obvious next step. “Although I didn’t start out to be a manager, my discovery that I’d found my calling evolved over time.” 

Sumbal had been both teaching and working at Acorns Children’s Hospice for several years before enrolling on a CMI Level 7 Extended Diploma in Strategic Management and Leadership. She started to apply her learning to her role at the charity. 

Sumbal progressed with her CMI qualification quickly. Her enthusiastic approach and experience resulted in an offer to train as a CMI assessor almost as soon as she had completed her Level 7 in 2017. 

Since then, Sumbal has worked in the higher education sector, dividing her time between teaching and delivering higher education and skills-based vocational training programmes across multiple providers both nationally and internationally. She has been a lecturer and programme coordinator across several higher education colleges and has provided distance-learning training for vocational qualifications.
