Defence is a complicated business. To keep the UK’s nuclear fleet operational, for example, the UK’s Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA) relies on a range of private-sector providers. Rolls Royce provides the reactors, BAE Systems builds the vessels and Babcock International manages and maintains the subs in service.

For Joann Robertson CMgr FCMI, head of supply chain transformation at Babcock, working in a “collective” presents a particular challenge: she has to ensure she can deliver what Babcock needs while meeting the project’s overarching goals – without any direct authority. 

“It takes experience to bring people on a journey without being their boss,” says Joann.
