In the competitive higher education landscape of the Middle East, universities are increasingly tasked with a vital mission: ensuring that academic excellence translates directly into workplace readiness. For American International University (AIU) in Kuwait, this mission is achieved through a strategic partnership with CMI. By embedding CMI Dual Accreditation into its School of Business, AIU is not just issuing degrees; it is launching the careers of the region’s next generation of ‘cut above’ leaders. We spoke with Dr. Randa Diab-Bahman, Interim Assistant Dean of School & Business to find out more.

A strategic choice for global recognition

The decision to partner with CMI was driven by a commitment to prestige and practical advantage. As the only body in the world able to award Chartered Manager status, CMI offers a level of global recognition that sets AIU graduates apart. Today, every business degree programme at AIU includes the default option for students to graduate with a professional CMI qualification alongside their Bachelor’s degree.

We chose to partner with CMI to give our students a distinct advantage when entering the workplace. This grants our graduates exclusivity and enables more prospects for them, as they are seen as a ‘cut above the rest’ of the applicants with traditional degrees.

Curriculum evolution: from theory to practice

The partnership has fundamentally shaped AIU’s academic offerings. CMI Dual Accreditation process has allowed the university to move beyond traditional textbooks, developing a well-rounded curriculum that incorporates real-time workplace issues.

By using the CMI Professional Standard as a benchmark, AIU has successfully merged the worlds of academic theory and practical industry needs. This ensures that the curriculum is not a static set of modules, but a dynamic learning experience that evolves alongside global business trends.

Enhancing the student experience through CMI resources

One of the standout features of the partnership is the access to CMI practical learning resources, such as: case studies and industry thought leadership articles. AIU has taken the proactive step of dedicating an intern specifically to curate these resources, ensuring that in-class discussions are timely, relevant, and grounded in actual workplace dilemmas. These resources help students preemptively understand:

  • Workplace Adaptability: Familiarising students with professional expectations before they step into an office.
  • Strategic Decision-Making: Using real-world case studies to navigate complex management scenarios.
  • Professional Networking: Exposing students to a global network of job titles and perspectives that would otherwise be inaccessible.

Proven success: 500+ qualifications and counting

The partnership is not just successful in theory; the data proves its impact. Between 2025 and 2026, over 500 AIU students achieved CMI qualifications. However, the true metric of success lies in the feedback from the Kuwaiti business community.

AIU graduates are seen as very competent in the workplace with their CMI accreditation status. Employers have provided feedback that our graduates are adaptable and quick learners upon joining the workforce… and that they have been selected into their roles particularly due to the CMI advantage!

This direct link between accreditation and employment validates AIU’s commitment to sustainable, industry-led education.

Beyond the classroom: collaborative initiatives

The relationship between AIU and CMI extends far beyond curriculum mapping. The two organisations have co-developed a training scheme for local industry partners in Kuwait. This initiative offers professionals the chance to upskill within an academic setting, further strengthening the bond between the university and the regional economy.

Dr. Randa describes the experience of liaising with the CMI team as a "great learning experience," focusing on alignment of missions and consistent, high-standard communication.

The biggest benefit is that we are able to merge the two worlds of academic and practical elements into one program. Sustainable education cannot solely function on academic merit, but must also address industry needs.

Building future leaders

By choosing CMI Dual Accreditation, AIU is fulfilling its promise to produce leaders who are not just ‘qualified’ but ‘capable’. These graduates enter the workforce with the confidence of a professional and the grounding of a scholar, ready to lead with integrity and impact.
