CMI is pleased to see that meta-skills are regarded as essential in the Scottish skills landscape. In this submission, we are urging the Scottish Government to make a strong case for management and leadership in its future spending priorities if it is serious about recovering from the pandemic.

Management and leadership skills are critical to helping businesses across Scotland and public sector organisations to grow and thrive. This will be crucial to Scotland's economic recovery post-pandemic and to move towards a greener, fairer, and more inclusive society.

The main asks of the Scottish Government are to:

  • Maintain spending on meta-skills programmes and ensure all those who need to upskill or retrain can access these programmes.
  • Intensify its focus on management and leadership development to deliver access to core skills bolt on.
  • Conduct and publish assessments of the economic impact of the pandemic across different protected characteristics.
  • Partner with CMI to promote high quality leadership training for the R&D sector.
