Article: “I thought to myself: I’m completely blagging this” Written by Lucinda Everett Friday 07 November 2025 Share Share to LinkedIn Share to Facebook Share via email Charlie Hopkin CMgr MCMI found himself taking on a director’s role without much management experience as the company he worked for rapidly expanded. Through CMI, he learned to inspire people Two years ago, Charlie Hopkin CMgr MCMI had a sudden realisation. An award-winning fire engineer who had recently been promoted to director at fire safety consultancy Ashton Fire, he found himself leading the company’s entire Manchester office, managing its team of 12, with some responsibility for a wider team of 60. “I looked around the office one day and thought, ‘I actually have no idea how to manage these people. I am completely blagging this.’” Like many specialists who find themselves in leadership positions, Charlie’s career had been built on a deep passion for and expertise in the technical aspects of his role – although he admits it took a little “stumbling” to get to where he is now. Kindling a career After studying civil engineering (“because I was good at physics and maths, and going to university was just what you did at the time”), Charlie graduated into a tricky economic landscape. “I’m going to be completely honest. I could not get a job,” he says. “At one point, I was applying to be an accountant.” Are you a Chartered Manager with a story to tell? After a few more years and careers – including winning a scholarship to study evacuation modelling for large passenger ships, and a move to Turkey that was cut short by a failed military coup in 2016 – he landed the role that would determine his trajectory. He started with OFR Consultants as a fire engineer, which involves working with designers, architects, structural engineers and other teams to help design buildings that are safe from fire, Charlie explains. “I fell in love with the work, but the real spark came when I met my colleague, Mike Spearpoint. He had been a top fire engineering academic in New Zealand and he got me to look at fire safety in a very different way – as something you can quantify and model.” Charlie’s technical curiosity snowballed and Mike became Charlie’s industry supervisor for his PhD, which looked (in simple terms) at how to model fires in order to enhance fire safety design in residential buildings. “I didn’t have a clue – I had to change that” When Ashton Fire hired Charlie five years later, it was for his specialism in computer modelling the movement of smoke and heat around buildings, and of people as they evacuate spaces. “Originally, it was going to be me and maybe one or two others, just doing that,” says Charlie. “But fire engineers were so in demand that I ended up building a team and an office in Manchester and becoming a director.” Keep reading: the no-brainer of becoming Chartered Login or register below for Free Instant Access Login If you are already registered as a CMI Friend, Subscriber or Member, just login to view this article.
