Article: “I live and breathe CMI values,” says our Chartered Manager of the Week Written by Annie Makoff-Clark Thursday 22 January 2026 Share Share to LinkedIn Share to Facebook Share via email Sumbal Manzoor CMgr FCMI is a big champion of CMI, having used its qualifications to supercharge her career Sumbal Manzoor CMgr FCMI has supported 46 managers to become Chartered since she got involved with CMI. She may have started her management journey as an “accidental manager”, but her skill sets and expertise demonstrate that she’s also a natural teacher. Sumbal has trained over 500 educators to deliver higher education courses and has consistently striven to bring the ethos and values of CMI into every higher education role she has held. An ethos of continuous improvement “Teaching was always something I did, even as a student,” says Sumbal. “Younger learners would always come to me for help. Even when I was not formally teaching, I ended up mentoring anybody who needed help. I’m wired to enjoy helping people.” Sumbal, who holds teaching qualifications in higher education, as well as several business administration qualifications, initially worked in third-sector retail, where she was responsible for several retail units for Acorns Children’s Hospice. She found herself asked to do more than her job description, such as looking at how to optimise resources, how to make the best use of available facilities, and how to support and manage her team. She started to apply her learning to her role at the charity. Sumbal progressed with her CMI qualification quickly. Her enthusiastic approach and experience resulted in an offer to train as a CMI assessor almost as soon as she had completed her Level 7 in 2017. Since then, Sumbal has worked in the higher education sector, dividing her time between teaching and delivering higher education and skills-based vocational training programmes across multiple providers both nationally and internationally. She has been a lecturer and programme coordinator across several higher education colleges and has provided distance-learning training for vocational qualifications.
