It was both an honour and an enriching personal experience to participate as a panellist at the recent Regional Voice event hosted by CMI Asia-Pacific on ‘Impactful Personal Effectiveness’. The one-hour conversation offered a dynamic exchange of insights, ideas and reflections on how individuals can sustain their personal and professional effectiveness in today’s complex organisational and societal contexts. As I reflect on the session and my contribution to it, I am struck by how relevant and multi-dimensional the concept of personal effectiveness has become in our modern work environments.

Watch now: Impactful Personal Effectiveness

The session brought together professionals from different disciplines, each with a distinct perspective on what makes personal effectiveness truly impactful. The discussion was ably moderated and well structured, beginning with broad perspectives and gradually deepening into more specific and practical aspects. What emerged was not a one-size-fits-all model, but a rich tapestry of ideas, principles and practices that individuals can adapt to their own professional realities.

Effectiveness in a matrix organisation

In my contribution to the discussion, I focused initially on how to be effective in a matrix organisation – a context many modern professionals find themselves in. In such structures, where reporting lines are often complex and priorities are shared across functions and geographies, personal effectiveness requires clarity, empathy and strong interpersonal awareness.

I emphasised the importance of understanding and prioritising requests rather than reacting to every demand with equal urgency. Equally critical is the ability to maintain cordial professional relationships – which often act as the true lubricant of progress in a matrix system – across departments. Effective communication becomes the bridge between clarity and execution. I also underscored the need to set healthy boundaries, ensuring that while one remains a team player, one’s focus and energy are not diffused across competing agendas.

Self-awareness and continuous learning

The second theme I spoke about was self-awareness and continuous reflection – qualities that, in my view, form the foundation of long-term personal effectiveness. In today’s fast-paced, information-rich environments, effectiveness is no longer about working harder, but working wiser. That requires periodic reflection on where one’s time and energy are going, and whether that aligns with one’s priorities and values.

I shared my belief that being truly effective involves managing not only time, but also energy – the mental, emotional and physical stamina that enables us to perform sustainably. This requires curiosity and humility: to explore what skills or knowledge may be missing, and to commit to a path of continuous, lifelong learning. In my own experience, the professionals who remain relevant and impactful over decades are not necessarily those with the most impressive titles, but those who have nurtured a learner’s mindset – always asking, ‘What’s changing? What’s next? What can I do better?’

Communication and influencing

A third area I touched on was communication and influencing, which I described as the lifeblood of personal effectiveness. Regardless of technical expertise, one’s ability to articulate ideas, inspire others and influence outcomes determines how much impact one ultimately creates.
