Article: “Chartered status means people see me as someone who’s sought after for sound advice” Written by Caroline Roberts Thursday 19 February 2026 Share Share to LinkedIn Share to Facebook Share via email Olusegun Otegbeye CMgr FCMI, our Chartered Manager of the Week, was inspired to reach for the stars by NASA chief flight director Gene Kranz Guiding the crew of the stricken Apollo 13 space mission safely back to Earth was one of the greatest teamwork feats of all time. And a book by its orchestrator, NASA’s chief flight director Gene Kranz, caught the imagination of a young, rocket-obsessed Olusegun Otegbeye CMgr FCMI. Kranz’s management style, along with the book’s title, Failure is Not an Option, has continued to influence and inspire him throughout his own 21-year management career. “When I believe in a course of action, I’ll follow it all the way to the end,” he says. “One of the key things that resonated with me is the setting of rigorous and clear directions and goals. No one is a mind reader, so you always need to tell people exactly what your expectations are. Kranz is also very principled, which is something my dad always taught me.” Fast-paced delivery Olusegun began his engineering career in his native Nigeria before moving to the UK 18 years ago to pursue an MSc in project management at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen. His experience spans the oil and gas, transport infrastructure and utilities sectors. Are you a Chartered Manager with a story to tell? It’s a complex role that involves collaborating with public and private stakeholders to deliver projects in a fast-paced environment while managing a multidisciplinary team of professionals and supporting their CPD. His quest for constant development eventually led him to CMI. Moving from oil and gas into the engineering consultancy sector meant a choice between the Chartered Management Consultant or the Chartered Manager route, he explains. “My degree subject marked me out as a project management professional, but I didn’t want to be pigeonholed, so I decided to go for the broader management path. With my line manager, I came up with a plan that exposed me to the roles and opportunities that allowed me to tick off all the competencies, including managing more direct reports.” Olusegun also became involved in outreach as a visiting lecturer at his alma mater and the University of Salford, and as a visiting professional at several further education colleges.
