About the role:

The role is ideal for a highly organised, agile and politically-aware candidate, who is looking for a varied role that will see them develop their public affairs and stakeholder engagement skills and grow their networks. Working closely with teams across the organisation including the Research Team and Policy and Impact Team, the successful candidate will play a key role in supporting CMI’s advocacy activity across the UK.

The Public Affairs Officer will: Develop and support delivery of high quality stakeholder engagement strategies; Monitor and communicate key political developments to CMI stakeholders; Support senior CMI stakeholders with their advocacy activity through precise briefing; and respond in an agile manner to ad hoc requests for support as required.

Responsibilities:

  • To support CMI’s public affairs activities, in line with the Communications and External Affairs three year strategy. This includes helping to build and maintain relationships with Ministers, MPs, civil servants and opinion formers, as well as supporting the APPG for Management.
  • To help develop and deliver CMI’s stakeholder engagement plans. This includes mapping stakeholders, developing messaging, and maintaining appropriate records to support internal reporting.
  • To monitor policy developments and keep colleagues informed of potential impacts on CMI.
  • To represent and present on behalf of CMI at meetings and events.
  • To draft letters, articles, briefings and reports for internal and external audiences.
  • To provide high quality policy and project support across the policy team.
  • To support CMI’s social media activity with engaging public affairs-focused content.

  • It is essential you will have a working knowledge of the UK Parliament and Government. This may be from relevant experience in an MP’s office, government department, political party or previous public affairs role.
  • Degree level education is preferable but not essential.
