DAME VIVIAN HUNT WINS TOP MANAGEMENT AWARD

Dame Vivian Hunt, Managing Partner of UK and Ireland at McKinsey and Company has received the Chartered Management Institute’s (CMI) Gold Medal Award, one of the highest honours in the management profession.
At CMI’s annual President’s Dinner event on Wednesday 15 May 2019 held at Kensington Palace in the presence of Her Royal Highness The Countess of Wessex, the new Patron of The Chartered Management Institute who has succeeded His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, Dame Vivian Hunt received the Gold Medal Award, in recognition of her outstanding leadership and management at McKinsey and Company.
The award also recognises Dame Vivian’s work as a leader within McKinsey in leadership and diversity. She frequently speaks on McKinsey’s flagship research on the topic and has co-authored publications, including Women Matter, Delivering through Diversity, and The Power of Parity: How advancing women’s equality can add $12 trillion to global growth. She was previously named as one of the top ten “most influential black people in Britain” by the Powerlist Foundation, and The Financial Times identified her as one of the “European Women to Watch” and more recently as one of the 30 most influential people in the City of London.
CMI’s Gold Medal Award has been running for over 35 years and recognises the greatest accomplishments in management and leadership, with recent awards going to leading business figures such as Dame Carolyn McCall, the CEO of ITV, and Jimmy Wales, founder and CEO of Wikipedia with last year’s winner Dame Stephanie Shirley.
The annual President’s Dinner, at which the Gold Medal Award is officially presented, celebrates the positive social impact that management and leadership excellence makes. Given the heightened political and economic uncertainty presented by Brexit, the ability to build a highly productive and internationally competitive economy will be defined by the quality of leaders and managers.
Dame Vivian Hunt was formally presented with her award by Bruce Carnegie-Brown, President of the CMI, at the CMI’s President’s Dinner on 15th May at Kensington Palace.

Lifetime Achievement Award
The CMI also gave its Lifetime Achievement Award to Julia Unwin CBE. Julia has had a distinguished career addressing some of the most pressing issues in Society through her work at the Housing Corporation, the Charity Commission and her leadership of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. Most recently, Julia led the Inquiry into the Future of Civil Society.
I am honoured to have been recognised by CMI, and we should not forget that leadership is knowing that the disasters, crises and upheavals that beset management life could always be predicted by listening really carefully and paying attention.

- Julia Unwin was the Chief Executive of Joseph Rowntree Trust from 2007-2016 and oversaw the development of JRF’s comprehensive strategy to solve UK poverty – the organisation’s largest programme to date. During her time at JRF and JRHT, she developed and implemented a clear and compelling strategic direction for the organisations; modernised and renewed internal governance and management; and led JRF to adopt a four-nation outlook, establishing a strong presence in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Under Julia’s leadership, JRHT developed a new mixed-income community in York of environmentally friendly housing. Other highlights include JRF and JRHT’s influential work on loneliness and the implications of an ageing society, particularly dementia, and writing the book Why Fight Poverty?
- The Countess of Wessex has been appointed the new Royal Patron of the Chartered Management Institute, succeeding from the Duke of Edinburgh Prince Philip.
- The President’s Dinner of the Chartered Management Institute is an annual dinner, held under the auspices of the President of CMI Bruce Carnegie-Brown, the Chairman of Lloyds of London, to honour outstanding achievements by UK managers.
