Press release:

Reacting to the release this morning of new ONS figures on the UK's disability pay gap, Anthony Painter, Director of Policy at CMI commented:

Monday 25 April 2022

It’s disappointing to see that we still have a persistent disability pay gap in the UK and there is little sign of improvement. All organisations should have equal pay across the workplace - there is no fundamental reason why disabled people’s earnings should be nearly 12% lower than their colleagues.

There is clearly still bias against disabled people in the workplace and a failure to develop enough of a robust support system in the vast majority of employers.  It’s the duty of managers and leaders to remove barriers that hold disabled people back and for employers to ensure they are trained to do so. Deliberate steps to address pay gaps are essential if a narrowing of the pay gap is to be achieved.
