How older managers can stay relevant in a changed workplace

Eddie Boyd CMgr MCMI is an electrical engineer and Chartered Manager with decades of experience behind him. Currently he works at Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, working in a team that advises the public sector on how to decarbonise their buildings.

Having turned 60 this year, Eddie is “taking the opportunity to reflect” on his career and “the challenges and opportunities ahead”.

One issue he feels passionate about is that, post Covid-19 pandemic, we are living in a “very changed environment with a new approach to work and the workplace”. This can exacerbate intergenerational differences and leave older workers struggling to “maintain a useful presence”. 

This is a challenge both for individuals and for organisations, which risk losing the experience and expertise of older cohorts. And it’s one that extends right across our economy and society.

Isolation over camaraderie

“The rate of change means that the way business is carried out, the approach to the office, and the etiquette have changed significantly, with more technology-based communications,” says Eddie. “The post-Covid office is adaptive and tolerant of more, so the expectations of individuals have changed.”
