Article: “ChMC gives you enhanced credibility. It takes your career to the next level” Written by Caroline Roberts Thursday 14 May 2026 Share Share to LinkedIn Share to Facebook Share via email Her role supporting business innovation is hugely rewarding, says Rebecca Black ChMC, our Chartered Management Consultant of the Month Rebecca Black ChMC’s role as a tax consultant is certainly varied. “I could be working with a cheese manufacturer one day and with an engineering company that makes printed circuit boards the next,” she says. “It may be a bit of a cliché, but no two days are the same. You get to learn about so many interesting things you’d never otherwise have come across.” As associate director of R&D tax with international consulting firm Leyton, Rebecca helps companies identify tax savings, and prepare and submit claims to HMRC. Her client base spans a wide range of industries, including technology, engineering, manufacturing and life sciences. “Their achievements become your achievements” One of the most rewarding aspects of Rebecca’s job is hearing what businesses have been able to achieve with the money they have saved, she says. But, over time, she realised that a back-office role wasn’t quite right for her. “I wanted to be more client-facing, have more of an interactive experience and build relationships. It’s where my strengths lie. I was also attracted to the problem-solving aspect of consulting.” Making the complex simple One of the biggest challenges of Rebecca’s role is staying up-to-date with constantly changing tax regulations. Keeping clients engaged with the topic can be challenging, too – the finer details of tax legislation can sometimes cause people’s eyes to glaze over, she says. “You need to be a strong communicator and be adaptable so you’re able to talk to people from a wide range of business backgrounds. You need to be able to explain complex tax concepts in a straightforward way, and show them how it makes sense for their business and how they can benefit.” Keep reading – more from Rebecca Login or register below for Free Instant Access Login If you are already registered as a CMI Friend, Subscriber or Member, just login to view this article.
