“As the team grew, I kind of floated to the top. Classic accidental manager,” explains CMI’s Student of the Year 2023, Ellie Pickering.

“I managed one person, then three, then the project got more complex and I started to feel a little uncomfortable. So when my boss asked if I would be interested in taking a management apprenticeship, I jumped at the chance. It’s been absolutely brilliant and it totally changed my mindset.”

Ellie embarked on the Operations/Departmental Manager Level 5 Apprenticeship in 2020. But the love of learning runs through Ellie’s veins and she’s been on quite a journey.
