Article: From survival to strategic leadership: how learning transformed my confidence, career and life Written by Judith Otisi ACMI fCMgr Wednesday 22 July 2026 Share Share to LinkedIn Share to Facebook Share via email Judith Otisi ACMI fCMgr explains how studying for a Level 7 qualification with CMI helped her build confidence, think strategically and become a more effective leader My story is one of a young girl who endured rejection, poverty, abandonment and countless obstacles before finding her voice, purpose and future. While I reflect on resilience and survival, one of the most transformative chapters of my journey came through education, professional development and leadership learning. Growing up, confidence was not something that came naturally to me. Many of my early experiences left me questioning my worth and capabilities. Yet, despite the challenges I faced, I developed a determination to keep learning and improving. Education became the bridge between my circumstances and my aspirations. That commitment to learning eventually led me to pursue a Level 7 qualification in Strategic Management and Leadership Practice with CMI in partnership with the University of Dundee when I went for my MSc in International Business. Looking back, this decision became one of the most important investments I have ever made in myself. Leadership is defined by vision The Level 7 programme challenged me to think differently. It moved me beyond operational thinking and helped me understand the wider strategic responsibilities of leadership. I learned how organisations create value, how leaders influence culture and how effective decision-making shapes long-term success. More importantly, I learned that leadership is not defined by title or position but by vision, integrity, resilience and the ability to inspire others. Several learning models and frameworks proved particularly valuable. Strategic tools such as SWOT and PESTLE analysis helped me assess both internal and external factors affecting organisational performance. Stakeholder analysis strengthened my understanding of engagement, communication and influence. Change management principles provided practical approaches for navigating uncertainty and supporting people through transition. These frameworks transformed leadership from a theoretical concept into a practical discipline that I could apply confidently in professional settings.
