Article: “It’s never too late to shape your future” Written by Caroline Roberts Friday 27 March 2026 Share Share to LinkedIn Share to Facebook Share via email Russell Roberts CMgr FCMI, our Chartered Manager of the Week, explains how a Level 7 Senior Leader Apprenticeship has helped him think more strategically “Crikey, what am I doing at university? I don’t belong here,” was the initial reaction of Russell Roberts CMgr FCMI when he arrived at Cranfield University to start its Senior Leader Executive Programme. The programme is accredited by CMI through the award of a Level 7 Diploma in Strategic Management and Leadership Practice, along with a Level 7 Senior Leader Apprenticeship. Russell, who is a business manager at waste management company Biffa, was 55 at the time and had left college at 23 with a Higher National Diploma in hospitality. Suddenly, he was spending his evenings studying alongside his three teenage daughters. “I didn’t see myself as a university person,” he says. “But there’s no end date to learning, and it’s never too late to shape your future.” Transferable skills In his current role, Russell runs the depot that collects household waste on behalf of Norwich City Council. It involves managing around 60 operatives and supervisors, as well as overseeing data collection and strategic issues, such as fleet procurement. The diversity of the job is one of the things he most enjoys; on any given day, he could be dealing with anything from an HR issue to an environmental incident. There’s also a lot of social value in working with the council to improve recycling rates and promote sustainability. We’ve just started doing school visits to teach children the importance of recycling, and they can pass on that information to their parents. The power of children to change things is something that needs to be tapped into.” Russell has now been at Biffa for over six years, following a previous career in hotel management that equipped him with many transferable skills, especially around people management and getting the best out of your team. “It’s about them coming into work and enjoying the job on a day-to-day basis, and making sure that they’ve got a platform to air their views and influence things. If your staff are happy, everything works well.” Personable and available Ensuring he has some one-to-one time with team members is a key part of Russell’s strategy. “I’ve seen the benefit you get from that. I had somebody come to me last week and tell me they were bored with what they were doing. I said, ‘Great.
