Meaningful points in time – whether changing jobs, welcoming a New Year, getting a new boss, or even celebrating a milestone birthday – offer a time to reset. Break with the old, in with the new. 

These pivotal moments can fill us with a sense of promise and sudden bursts of aspiration – and are a great moment to capitalise on our motivation to seize the day. Your team, too, may be entering January having exchanged their festive mood for something a little more future-oriented and ready to launch themselves towards new career goals.

The key to achieving any goal is all about pinpointing how to close the gap between where you are now and where you want to be. This may require acquiring new behaviours or knowledge. Whether you are setting your own goals or helping your direct reports define their own objectives, doing this will require effective reflection and planning.
