As CMI chief executive Ann Francke mentioned in her Times column earlier this year, lack of exposure to sunlight can have a dramatic impact on people’s wellbeing. Ann highlighted Adele as one famous sufferer of seasonal affective disorder, pointing out that it was one reason behind the singer’s decision to leave the UK for Los Angeles.
Not everyone has that pop star privilege. And for the millions of workers who remain here, the lack of daylight isn’t the only reason they may baulk at the approaching winter. At a time of rising costs and belt tightening, the seasonal shift can mean extra pressure and stress – with utility bills soaring as heating and ovens go on, and the increased financial burden of Christmas.
