How to protect your apprenticeship funding ahead of Level 7 changes

Tuesday 08 July 2025

From January 2026, government funding for most Level 7 apprenticeships will no longer be available for learners aged 22 and over. This shift is prompting employers and education providers across the UK to act now to secure funding while it remains in place.

Whether you’re an employer looking to develop your senior leaders or a provider supporting your clients with future-ready programmes, this is a crucial moment to plan and register learners before the changes take effect.

What’s changing for Level 7 apprenticeships?

As part of updated apprenticeship funding policy, public funding for most Level 7 apprenticeships will be withdrawn for learners aged 22+. From January 2026, organisations will need to fund these programmes independently or explore alternative development routes.

This change impacts popular programmes such as the Level 7 Senior Leader Apprenticeship, which has become a key way for employers to strengthen leadership pipelines and for individuals to gain valuable management expertise.

Why act now?

Registering learners ahead of the January 2026 deadline allows employers and providers to maximise remaining public funding. It’s a critical opportunity to invest in leadership capability with substantial financial support still available.

Organisations that act early can secure access to programmes that build strategic leadership skills, prepare future senior managers, and drive long-term performance - all supported by existing government funding.

Why CMI?
