Article: Why an apprenticeship could be your “best decision” Written by CMI Insights Tuesday 10 February 2026 Share Share to LinkedIn Share to Facebook Share via email To mark the UK’s National Apprenticeship Week, we speak to nine current and former CMI apprentices to hear first-hand how the qualifications have changed their careers It’s National Apprenticeship Week in the UK – a time to celebrate the impact of apprenticeships on people, employers and the economy. At CMI, we know that management apprenticeships are a powerful pathway, providing personal growth, validation, career opportunities and added value for organisations. Here, we speak to nine current or former apprentices who’ve taken this route to professional development and now advocate for it themselves. Equipped for a global role Take Jessica Thorne, who gained a distinction in her Level 7 Senior Leadership Apprenticeship at Cranfield University in November 2025. When Jessica entered the programme, she was working for the UK and Ireland team at McDonald’s. She was keen to advance her strategic leadership capability, with an eye on senior roles in the future. What is a management apprenticeship? Follow the link below to find out more about the apprenticeship journey, whether you're already employed or looking to start your career, plus the different management apprenticeships that CMI offers. Let's go Jessica says her apprenticeship empowered her to become far more confident. She started thinking more strategically and longer term and was able to apply her learnings directly in her role. For example, the course equipped her to lead a “horizon-scanning” project for McDonald’s, combining models she’d learned into a framework that teams could use to scan the macro-environment and adjust for risks and potential opportunities. In short, the course did just what she’d hoped: it enabled her to grow. “Because of that growth, I’ve now become the global supply chain digitisation manager,” she says, “where I use all my knowledge and skills to support McDonald’s markets outside the UK.” Career-making confidence Others have made major career moves off the back of an apprenticeship, too. Sarah Hubbard CMgr FCMI, operations manager at Oxford Sigma, is even more emphatic about the impact of hers. It taught her transferable skills that spanned the public and private sectors and helped her overcome the gaps in her CV following the career breaks she’d taken to raise her children. “For quite a few years before my apprenticeship, I’d been struggling to get higher-level jobs,” she explains. “If I hadn’t done the apprenticeship, I wouldn’t have got my current role. I came into the interview with a lot more confidence that I could do it.” Keep reading – more apprenticeship insights Login or register below for Free Instant Access Login If you are already registered as a CMI Friend, Subscriber or Member, just login to view this article.
