Aspiring managers now have a new way to help drive their career on to the next level.

CMI and The Open University Business School have teamed up to offer a new online management course that leads to a CMI Level 5 Award in Management and Leadership – the first online course of its kind.

The two-part MOOC is designed with digital-savvy managers in mind that want to give their career a boost with a professional accreditation achieved in a flexible way.

Each course in the programme will take learners three hours of study per week and lasts four weeks. Managers will be able to learn new skills through a blended approach to learning including social learning, self-directed study and peer learning.

On completing both parts of the MOOC, managers will be eligible to take a CMI Level 5 Award in Management and Leadership, which will help them work towards achieving professional Chartered Manager status.

CMI director of higher education partnerships Ian Myson said: “Only one in five managers that have studied online say that their course has been accredited. This new innovative partnership with the OU means that we’re able to deliver a CMI-accredited course to help thousands of managers develop recognised professional skills, using the latest tried and tested online learning techniques.”

Simon Nelson, CEO of FutureLearn, the company providing the online platform for the course, said it was important that managers were given access to flexible courses that could fit around their busy personal and professional lives.

“We know that for managers to fit study into their lives, the way they study has to be flexible, meaningful, interactive and modular,” he said. “Our MOOCS are designed to deliver the best social learning experiences for everyone, anywhere and on any device.

“Now, with the introduction of accreditation through our platform, we are providing a totally flexible way for managers to advance their careers and we are excited to be able to enable more learners to take part than ever before.”

Professor Rebecca Taylor, executive dean of The Open University Business School, added: “We have a long and proud history of offering innovative solutions to meet the needs of students and businesses, harnessing the latest technology to educate the leaders of tomorrow.

“Combining our academic expertise with the professional application of the CMI through FutureLearn means these courses offer huge reach and accessibility. Our understanding of how busy managers learn effectively at work ensures that these courses fit flexibly around work commitments and enable the learner to benefit immediately by applying the learning to their current practice.”
