Become a Trustee

The Board of Trustees is at the centre of CMI governance. Board members are Trustees of the Institute, the CMI being a charity registered in England and Wales, and separately registered in Scotland. Their responsibilities are in essence identical to those of a non-executive Director who serves on a company board.

How the process works

Vacancies for elected member places on the Board, when available, are advertised widely across our channels, including our website, our magazine, member e-newsletters and CMI’s social media channels.

The role and personal specification for a Board member are published, alongside a well-established set of competencies for Trustees.

When a new Board member is elected they will serve a two-year term. The Board member is then eligible to stand for re-election for two more two year terms, to a maximum period of six years.

Who is eligible to become a Trustee?

We welcome applications from individuals who are committed to making a meaningful contribution to the Institute and its strategic direction. To be eligible for consideration, candidates must meet the following criteria:
  • Be a current Institute Member, Chartered Member, Fellow, Chartered Fellow, Companion, or Chartered Companion;
  • Possess experience operating at a strategic level, demonstrating an ability to contribute to high-level decision-making and long-term planning;
  • Ideally, bring prior experience serving as an executive or non-executive director, or in a comparable governance or leadership role.

I am interested, what do I do next?

We are now inviting expressions of interest from members who are enthusiastic about contributing to the governance and strategic leadership of the Institute. If you are considering putting yourself forward for the role of Trustee, we encourage you to express your interest by emailing secretariat@managers.org.uk before Friday 30th May 2025.

Before submitting a formal expression of interest, members are welcome to contact the Secretariat team to discuss the role in more detail, clarify any questions they may have, and better understand the level of commitment involved.

What will the next steps be?

As part of the next steps, we will be in touch to request a copy of your CV and to have a conversation with you about your motivations for seeking a position on the Board. This dialogue helps us better understand your aspirations and how they align with the responsibilities of the role.
